Sasa kamaboko
Japan’s representative dish is probably sushi. It is known around the world that Japanese seafood is delicious.
In order to preserve this delicious fish, a food called “Kamaboko” was developed a long time ago. It is made from white fish, cut into pieces, and seasoned slightly to avoid spoiling the taste of the fish.
Miyagi Prefecture is famous for its unique “sasa kamaboko.” Unlike the normal tube type, it has a bamboo-like shape, and looks like a small surfboard!
It is steamed and then grilled briefly to give it a golden brown and crispy surface. It has a nice aroma and a chewy texture!
Freshly baked Sasa Kamaboko is the best、 so there are several places in Sendai where you can experience making Sasa Kamaboko. Please try eating Miyagi’s Sasa Kamaboko!
THE IDEA BEHIND HALAL SASAKAMABOKO
The idea to make sasakamaboko halal was born because until 2022 there were still no company/shop that made halal sasakamaboko which could be consumed safely by Muslims because sasakamaboko usually contains mirin or alcohol.
We want Muslims to also be able to try foods that are popular souvenirs in Sendai.
Then with this initiative we contacted Oizen company, a famous kamaboko producing company in miyagi.
Then we discussed our intention and after several tasting, trial and error, we finally succeeded in making Sasakamaboko which is Muslim friendly without alcohol or other haram ingredients. Our kamaboko is also perfect for souvenirs since it can be stored at room temperatures for half a year.
We are making Sasakamaboko with three flavors. Original, Cheese and Spicy.

We participated in the 10th New Tohoku Souvenir Contest Exhibition. The 10th “New Tohoku Souvenir Contest” is a contest to support product promotion and market development for buyers and consumers. The 10th New Tohoku Souvenir Contest received 190 entries. And we won The Inbound Special Award!
This event was exhibiting products for inbound tourists, this is not just a regular contest but doubles as a business meeting, held in Sendai City to discover new souvenirs that represent Tohoku.
At this event we exhibit HALAL SASAKAMABOKO (Fish Cake) SOUVENIR made by Japan Halal TV in collaboration with Oizen Kamaboko from Minamisanriku. Sasakamaboko is a type of fish cake that is a popular Sendai souvenir.
We made the halal version of it, without alcohol and meat.
This is the first time that we joined the contest and Alhamdullilah won! in one of the categories.
We are grateful for this, Alhamdullilah. We hope that our halal products can be available at many places and stores in Japan.
